Distribution and habitat. Hemidactylus palaichthus is endemic to northern Amazonia, occurring in Brazil, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Lucia Island ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). Hoogmoed (1973) also reported it from coastal Suriname. In Brazil it is known from the state of Amazonas, along the Negro River and Madeira– Purus interfluvium, and in open vegetation (lavrado) areas of the state of Roraima. Hemidactylus palaichthus is scansorial and nocturnal, inhabits primary and secondary forests, and perianthropic areas, where it is found on tree trunks, on rock surfaces, on isolated vegetation in pastures, in crevices of walls of man-made structures, and on fences of farms—Vanzolini 1978b; Cunha 1981; O’Shea 1989; Vitt & Zani 1998; Molina et al. 2004).
