Lectotype (Paton in Jarvis & al. in Taxon 50: 516. 2001): Herb. Clifford: 304, Origanum 3, sheet A (BM-000628967) .

Current name: Origanum majorana L. View in CoL View at ENA ( Lamiaceae ).

Note: Ietswaart (in Leiden Bot. Ser. 4: 83. 1980) stated, "Type: Linnaeus s.n. (holo BM)", possibly in reference to Clifford material, as did Hedge (in Ali & Nasir, Fl. Pakistan 192: 247. 1990). However, these statements are insufficiently precise to constitute formal typification. Siddiqi (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 118: 99. 1985) stated "Type: Herb. Linn. 743.13 ( LINN) ", but this specimen lacks the relevant Species Plantarum number (i.e. “10”) and is not considered original material. A Clifford sheet was designated as lectotype by Paton.
