( Figs 6 View FIGURE 6 , 17G–H View FIGURE 17 , 21A–C View FIGURE 21 , 23C View FIGURE 23 , 28 View FIGURE 28 , 30 View FIGURE 30 )

Thecla chlamydem View in CoL – Druce 1907: 577; Draudt 1919 -1921: 754; d’Abrera 1995: 1131.

Owda chlamydem (Druce) – Johnson, Kruse & Kroenlein 1997: 20 (lectotype designation of Thecla chlamydem View in CoL ).

Johnsonita chlamydem (Druce) – Bálint 2003: 246, 248 (new combination; erroneosuly in synonymy of Johnsonita auda ). Johnsonita pardoa (d’Abrera) – Lamas 2003: 49, fig. 166 ( Peru) (misidentification).

Type material ( Fig. 28 View FIGURE 28 ). The species was described on the basis of an unstated number of males from “Pozuzo, Peru ”. DÀbrera (1995) illustrated one female specimen designated as “ holotype ”. The same specimen was listed also as holotype by Johnson, Kruse & Kroenlein (1997), as well as a female. This specimens indeed a female, and was most probably depicted in the original figure of Druce, who confused the sex of the specimen, as testified by the original type label .

Lectotype designation. The female specimen documented by d’Abrera is hereby designated as the Lectotype possessing the following labels: (1) “Pozuzo, [//] Peru, [//] 5000 to 6000 ft [//] Native Collector” (white label, printed), (2) T. chlamydem [//] (m#) H. H. Druce [//] (white label, handwritten (Druce) in black), (3) “ex coll. [//] Hamilton Druce, [//] 1919.” (white label, printed), (4) “J.J.Joicey Coll. [//] B.M.1929–435.” (white paper, printed), (5) “Type” (confetti type label with red frame, printed), (6) “B.M. TYPE [//] No. Rh. 571 ” (white label, printed and handwritten), (7) “B.M(N.H.) [//] Rhopalocera [//] Slide V No. [//] 3498 ” (white label, printed in red, handwritten in black), (8) “ HOLOTYPE (f#) [//] SYNTYPE [//] Thecla [//] chlamydem [//] Druce [//] London, VI. 22. [//] Zs. Bálint, 2000, ” (red label with black frame, printed and handwritten (Bálint) in black), (9) “ BMNH (E) # 266485” (white label, printed). Via this action the name Thecla chlamydem is now fixed to the lectotype specimen serving as an objective reference to further studies.

Material examined (n=14, four dissections), all from PERU. Dep. Huánuco, Cueva de Las Pavas near Tingo Maria, 800–1000 m, 6.II.2002, T. Pyrcz leg. ( CEP – MZUJ: female); Amazonas, Pomacochas, 2200–2400 m, IV. 2002, B. Calderon ( CEP – MZUJ: female); Amazonas, Chachapoyas, Molinopampa – Granada, 2800 m, IX.2002, B. Calderon ( CEP – MZUJ: female); Amazonas, Rodriguez de Mendoza , 1400 m, II.2003, J. Wojtusiak ( CEP – MZUJ: two females; gen. prep. nos 371, 394/ J. Lorenc); Pasco, Yanachaga– Chemillen NP, INRENA Refugio El Cedro, 2310–2460 m, 2–4.II.2003, B. Benedek & A. Kun ( HNHM: two females); Pasco, Santa Cruz, route Oxapampa vers Villavicencio km 10, 2100–2200 m, 5.XII.2003, P. Boyer ( CB: female); Pasco – Oxapampa, SE d’Oxapampa, La Antena, 2400–2600 m, 29.X.2004, P. Boyer ( CB: male; gen. prep. 764/ J. Lorenc, female gen. prep. 371/ J. Lorenc); Pasco-Oxapampa, Alfamayo, 2200 m, III.2006. ( CB: male, female); Puno, Carcel Punco, 2600 m, III.2006, J. Böttger ( CB: female); Amazonas, Rodriguez de Mendoza , 1600–1800 m, no date, B. Calderon ( HNHM: female) .

Redescription. Wings. FW costa length 14–15 mm (n=4, CEP – MZUJ specimens), apical area of costa and outer margin not straight resulting somewhat rounded apex; male dorsal wing surface structural colouration deep violet, black border inner margin reaching the middle of vein M3; HW dorsal surface discal area structurally coloured; ventral FW submedial and medial pattern running parallel, postmedial pattern light, conspicuous and continuous from costa to tornus; ventral HW medial pattern with double light ruptive dashes, submarginal line indistinct, submedial, medial and submarginal areas with suffusion of gleaming scales, inner margin medial area with brown scaling. Male valva with large margin flip folded. Female ductus with parallel edges, without lower plate, upper plate symmetric and large with sclerotized frame with two spines in each side. Androconia present in ventral FW along Cubital 2 vein as a spot in submedian area.

Diagnosis. This species can be easily identified by the ventral FW submedian androconia and ventral HW medial pattern. Similar scent patch along the cubital vein appears in many species in the tribe, but it is unique in the genus. The similarly patterned and sympatric J. pardoa has a pointed FW apex and the outer margin is more or less straight, whilst the apex of J. chlamydem is less pointed and the outer margin is curved.

Distribution. Geographical: PERU (Amazonas, Cuzco, Huánuco, Pasco, Puno) ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 ); spatial: recorded between 800–2800 m a.s.l; temporal: recorded from January to March and from October to December.

Note. In Lamas (2003) one female specimen with data “ Cuzco, I–W, 24.X.2001 ” is erroneously identified as J. pardoa , but as the specimen has a rounded FW shape and the postbasal transverse dashed pattern is doubled, this indicates that it is actually J. chlamydem . It is also indicated that the specimen is a male, but no androconia can be observed.
