Smerinthus tokyonis Matsumura, 1921 View in CoL , Thousand Insects Japan (Additam.) 4: 751. TL: ‘ Tokyo, Honshu [ Japan]’

Diagnosis. Male ( Figure 10A–B View FIGURE 10 ): Similar to S. caecus , but upperside of body and wings browner. Forewing shorter, apex blunter, edge smoother, with slight protrusion outward on vein M 3. Upperside colour as in S. caecus but darker; pinkish area from basal to medial area faded. Hindwing similar to S. caecus , but black ocellus near tornus larger and complete with a small greyish-blue circle. Underside same as S. caecus , with large brown patch near tornus.

Female: Similar to male, but wings broader, ground pattern darker and more extensive, antennae much slenderer. Male genitalia ( Figure 11A–D View FIGURE 11 ): Similar to S. szechuanus , but uncus slender and curved downward, gnathos slender and straight. Valva narrower and longer. Sacculus almost the same as S. szechuanus , with a sharply pointed harpe. Phallus longer and slenderer than S. szechuanus , apical process markedly constricted basally and recurved anteriorly, with two separate teeth.

Female genitalia: Unknown in this study.

Distribution. Endemic to Japan.

Biological notes. This species was collected in middle to high elevation temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest, attracted to light at night.
