Type Locality: Madagascar.

Vernacular Names: Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec.

Synonyms: Echinops miwarti A. Grandidier 1869 ; Echinops nigrescens Petit 1931 ; Echinops pallescens Thomas 1892 .

Distribution: Western deciduous forest and spiny bush of S Madagascar.

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: The easternmost occurrence of this species was recorded recently in SE Madagascar ( Goodman et al., 1999 a).
