Distribution and Habitat ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ): — Senecio rhizomatus is found in the Andes of Ecuador, Perú ( Vision & Dillon 1996) and Bolivia, at elevations of 3500–4800 m.
Notes: — Cabrera (1985) noted that the holotype of Senecio rhizomatus was in NY, with isotypes in K, MO, US. This is a first-step lectotypification. Specimen NY 00259378 is here designated as lectotype, because it is the specimen that best represent the species.
After a detailed review of the type material and numerous collections of Senecio rhizomatus that show the incredible variability of the species, Senecio eliseae is here considered as a synonym of Senecio rhizomatus because no differences were observed between these two taxa. Although Calvo (2015) indicates as diagnostic features of Senecio eliseae the presence of erect branches only leafy on the upper half, discoid yellow nodding capitula, and glandularhirsute indumentum on stem, leaves, and synflorescence, those all are features diagnostics for Senecio rhizomatus .
