Egle Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830: 584 View in CoL . Type species Egle parva Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 View in CoL by designation of Coquillett (1910: 536).

Xenophorbia Malloch, 1920a: 175 . Type species by original designation ‘ Stomoxys muscaria Fabricius’, a misidentification. Identity fixed as Eriphia ciliata Walker, 1849 by Griffiths (2003: 2289). Synonymized by Huckett (1924: 9).

Description. Extremely small to medium-sized anthomyiids (wing length 2.1–6.0mm) with fully developed sexual dimorphism. Ground colour of head, body and appendages brownish black. Antenna ( Figs. 21–26 View FIGURES 21–26 ) with short to very short postpedicel; arista very short-pubescent and thickened on basal part. Lower face usually strongly produced and reaching beyond fronto-parafacial angle. Scutellum mid-ventrally sometimes without usual minute, hair-like setulae. Vein C bare on v-surface. Lower calypter usually considerably smaller than upper calypter, sometimes reduced and forming a narrow fold with barely convex hind margin. Mid tibia without av-setae. Hind tibia with 2–5 pd-setae, without apical pv-seta.

Male. Tergite VI bare, often very short and fused together with the syntergosternite. Surstylus basally connected to epandrium via a flexible, sclerotized bridge. Cerci usually with a prominent, often slender apical extension between surstyli. Pregonites articulated at hypandrium. Discrete bacilliform sclerites inserted between posterior arms of hypandrium and anterior bases of surstyli. Basiphallus very short, without sclerotized anterior wall; distiphallus sessile, i.e. without a stalked articulation against basiphallus.

Female. Tergite VIII at hind margin bare or with short setulae only. Hypoproct without cuticular pubescence. Cerci without longish apical setae, projecting apical part takes up less than one-third of cercal length.
