Description. Very similar to Egle minuta but different as follows:

Male. Terminalia ( Figs. 164–169 View FIGURES 164–169 ): Sternite V with 0–1 setula postero-laterally on basal plate. Epandrium smaller, without setulae on lateral parts (as in E. parva and E. suwai ). Surstyli narrow-based alongside margins of cerci (as in E. parva and E. suwai ); surstyli in lateral view broader on distal half. Apical extension of cerci not constricted on basal part, usually slightly tapering on distal third. Pregonite wider than long; postgonite without anterior transverse edge. Phallus with smaller and distally less inflated epiphallus.

Female. Oviscapt ( Fig. 198 View FIGURES 197–199 ): Sternite VII slightly broader and sclerotized on middle part; hypoproct more reduced, only consisting of minor apical part with a pair of setulae.

Biology. In Iceland reared from catkins of Tea-leafed willow ( Salix phylicifolia L.) ( Lyneborg 1965). Adults of both sexes have been collected in south Sweden on male catkins of Creeping willow ( S. repens L.), while Danish specimens have been taken on flowering Goat willow ( S. caprea L.) and Grey willow ( S. cinerea L.).

Distribution. A Holarctic species, but Palaearctic distribution poorly documented due to confusion with other species until quite recently. Recorded from Iceland, British Isles, Italy and Sweden ( Griffiths 2003), and from Denmark and Norway ( Michelsen 2004). Presently recorded for the first time from Finland and Spain. Widespread in boreal and western parts of North America according to Griffiths (2003).

Relationships. Egle lyneborgi belongs to the E. minuta species group within the E. minuta section (see above).
