Manota lachaisei Matile, 1972 View in CoL

Figs 26 View FIGURE 26 A–D

Redescription. Male. Colour. Head brown, vertex and occiput dark brown. Antenna brown. Mouthparts pale yellowish. Thorax brown. Legs pale yellowish, F2 and F3 basoventrally and F3 apically slightly infuscated. Wing pale greyish brown; haltere pale brown with dark brown knob. Abdomen brown. All setosity pale, yellowish or brownish, the thicker setae seeming darker than the finer setae and trichia. Head. Antennal flagellomere 4, Fig. 26 View FIGURE 26 A. Palpomere 3 of maxillary palpus with apicomesial thumb-like extension, with 4 apically expanded curved sensilla; palpomere 4 with parasegment, palpomere 5 ca. 1.2 times longer than palpomere 4. Number of strong postocular setae 9–10. Thorax. Anepisternum setose, with 65–77 setae; anterior basalare non-setose; preepisternum 2 setose, with 14–16 setae; laterotergite non-setose; episternum 3 setose, with ca. 26–28 setae. Legs. Mid and hind tibial organs absent. Wing. R1 meeting C well on the basal half of the costal margin; the sclerotized part of M extending to the level of the tip of R1, wing length 1.8–2.0 mm. Hypopygium, Figs 26 View FIGURE 26 B–D: Sternite 9 about two thirds of the length of gonocoxa, lateral margin sharply delimited, posterior margin slightly notched, anterior margin deeply incised, the setae similar to the ventral setae of gonocoxa. Ventral mesial margin of gonocoxa simple. Parastylar lobe elongate subquadrangular, with ca. 5 setae at the anteromesial angle and one stronger seta in a more lateral position. Paraapodemal lobe indistinct. Dorsal mesial margin of gonocoxa simple, slightly convex; dorsal posterior margin simple, at posteromesial angle a blunt, thumb-like setose lobe. Two juxtagonostylar setae present: both are megaseta-like and arise from separate basal bodies which are about half the length of the megasetae, the stronger more ventral megaseta is slightly sigmoid in one of the studied specimens ( Figs. 26 View FIGURE 26 B–D), in the other it is almost straight. Gonostylus about half the length of gonocoxa, elongate oval, slightly curved in outline; apicomesially with a short megaseta; the ventral setae similar to those on gonocoxa, the dorsal side almost non-setose, subbasally on the lateral side with a couple of strong setae deviating from the other gonostylar setosity. Aedeagus subtriangular, without distinct lateral shoulders, the apex curved ventrad. Hypoproct posteriorly extending to the basal part of gonostylus, the ventral setae forming a mesial longitudinal stripe of ca. 7 setae on each half. Cerci medially separate, apical part slightly narrowed, the setae confined to the apex, short, the longest ones slightly longer than the subapical width of cercus.

Female unknown.

Discussion. Manota lachaisei was described including the male hypopygium drawn in dorsal aspect from the Ivory Coast on the basis of the holotype only ( Matile 1972: Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ). We have not seen the holotype but our specimens fit well with description despite the ventral juxtagonostylar megasetae that are slightly sigmoid in one of our specimens instead of being straight as in the figure by Matile. However, this is caused most probably by different angle of view and we have no doubts about conspecificity. M. lachaisei is not especially similar to any other species and is easily distinguished by the characters given in the key.
