Pseudophotopsis mascatiana Invrea 1962: 324 , ♂, holotype " Somalia sett. (Migiurtinia), Passo Bocc., 1300 m, 27.IX.1957, leg. Scortecci [Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano].

Diagnosis

The male of Pseudophotopsis mascatiana can be distinguished from those of congeneric species by very long metasomal segment 1. The male of P. mascatiana is similar to that of East Mediterranean P. obliterata ( Smith 1855) in having similar sized ocelli and similar body coloration. It can be distinguished from the latter by having a much longer metasomal segment 1, well developed metanotal spines (very weak in obliterata ), and by a weak median basal tubercle on S2 (well developed in obliterata ).

Redescription

MALE. Body length 8.8–12.0 mm. Head length (from anterior clypeal border to occiput) 0.95–1.0X its maximal width. Ocelli large ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 2 – 10. 2 – 5 ), POD: OOD 1.25–1.5X; ratio of distance between posterior ocellus and posterior head border to longitudinal posterior ocellus diameter 1.5–1.6X. Mandibles excised beneath, with tooth near base, distance between its apex and upper mandibular ridge less than mandibular basal height ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 2 – 10. 2 – 5 ). First flagellomere 2.0X its width and equal flagellomere 2. Metanotum with a pair of spines. Radial cell of forewing with acuminate apex. Forewing venation as in Fig. 2 View FIGURES 2 – 10. 2 – 5 . T1 length 1.7–1.75X its maximal width ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 2 – 10. 2 – 5 ). T2 length 0.95X its maximal width. Segment 2 with lateral felt lines on T2 and S2, their length on T2 less than distance between felt line and posterior tergal border. S2 with weak median basal tubercle. T2 shiny, densely punctate basally and laterally mixed with small punctures, disc sparsely punctate. T7 coarsely punctate. Hypopygium with median apical tubercle. Genitalia are similar to those of P. kabakovi ( Lelej 1985, Fig. 32, 4).

Head and mesosoma redtestaceous, ocellar spot darkened. Legs castaneous with lighter tarsi. Metasomal segment 1 reddishbrown to piceous, segments 2–7 dark brown. Flagellomeres reddishbrown, lighter beneath, palps pale brown. Wings slightly infuscate in apical half with brown pterostigma and veins. Body and legs clothed with short recumbent and scattered long erect white pubescence. T2–T6 and S2–S6 with weak apical white fringes.

FEMALE. Unknown.
