Neotype (designated by Saka & Lombardi 2015: 155):— BRAZIL. Espirito Santo, Marilândia, Liberdade, propr.: Deoclécio Lorencini , Alt.: 150–350m /s.m., 37°21’7’’S, 58°30’51’’W, 28 September 2006 (fl.), L.F.S. Magnano et al. 1468 (MBML 32733!). GoogleMaps
Note:— Maranta kegeljani was described as a ‘robust species, (leaves) with large white stripes and slender veins’ ( Morren 1875a: 135). Later, Morren (1875d: 272) added more description, but employed the epithet kegeljani as a variety of Maranta tesselata , a species that was never described. However, in this publication, he applied the name M. kegeljani rather than M. tesselata var. kegeljani . Shortly after the publication of M. kegeljani, William Bull published several species of Maranta imported from Brazil, including M. bella ( Bull 1875) . According to Jacob-Makoy (1875: 822), M. bella is identical to M. kegeljani . Maranta tesselata var. kegeljani was also published in the same year, but after Jacob-Makoy placed M. bella as a synonym of M. kegeljani , since there is a reference to Bull’s name ( Morren 1875d: 272). Because it was described first, M. kegeljani has priority over M. bella (Art. 11.4 of ICN, McNeill et al. 2012). In order to validate M. kegeljani , we indicate the neotype as the illustration published by Morren (1875d) that depicts the characters mentioned in the original description. We also propose the combination of this name in Goeppertia and place G. bella as a synonym under G. kegeljani . The epithet pays homage to Mr. Ferdinand Kegeljan, secretary of the horticulture society of Namur and sponsor of the Belgian horticulture ( Morren 1875d: 272).
