Lectotype (designated here):—[illustration] tab. VIII in Jorissenne (1875).

Epitype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Espírito Santo, Santa Teresa: Mata Fria, terreno do Clério Lopes, 13 January 2000 (fl.), V. Demuner & E. Bauser 536 (MBML!, isoepitype RB!).

Note:— Calathea crocata is reported to be imported from Brazil to Liège by Mr. Jacob-Makoy in 1874, with a massive flowering in February 1875, after which it was described ( Jorissenne 1875: 142). It is recognizable due to the orange bracts of the inflorescence, besides the adaxial surface of leaf blades being dark green and abaxial surface purplish. However, a far more interesting characteristic of this species is the absence of the outer staminode, related to a shift to ornithophily ( Kennedy 1977). The original description states that the flowers presents three staminodes: one with a callus, therefore the callose staminode; a cucullate staminode; and one petal-shaped, positioned between the fertile stamen and the cucullate staminode, which in reality corresponds to the petaloid appendix of the stamen; there is no mention of a showy petaloid staminode. These characteristics, together with the vegetative ones, are sufficient to establish the identity of this species. Nevertheless, an epitype is here designed. The epithet ‘crocata’ refers to the orange-coloured bracts.
