Lectotype (designated here):—[illustration] tab. XV − XVII, fig. 4 in Morren (1875d).
Epitype (designated here):—Plants cultivated in the Botanical Garden of Copenhagen. From Berlin, Dahlem, Location in the Botanical Garden of Copenhagen: H03, 26 March 1984 (fl.), P1972-5153 (C!).
Note:—The original publication presents the illustration of a leaf, but the drawing published by Petersen (1889: 40, fig. 31), illustrates the habit, inflorescence, and flowers, which made it possible to ascertain the identity of the Morren species. The herbarium sheet deposited in C, and here chosen as epitype, conforms the protologue and the illustration in Petersen (1889). Morren described two varieties of Calathea bachemiana : a dwarf one, with smaller petioles and leaf blades; and a larger one with lanceolate leaf blades. This species is named after Mr. Bachem, mayor of Cologne, Germany .
