ANTARCTURIDAE View in CoL incertae sedis
Whitelegge (1904) described five species of Australian Arcturus which Nordenstam (1933) said belong or probably belong in ‘ Microarcturus ’. Four of these ( Arcturus alcicornis , A. dentatus , A. nodosus and A. simplicissimus ) were not illustrated by Whitelegge and type specimens no longer exist. It is now difficult to recognize the species or to assign them to genus. The descriptions suggest they are probably antarcturids rather than arcturids.
The fifth, Arcturus serrulatus Whitelegge, 1904 was figured by him (pp. 414–416, figures 118a–c), placed in Antarcturus by Stebbing (1908) and in ‘ Microarcturus ’ by Nordenstam (1933), Nierstrasz (1941) and by Hale (1946: 200–202, figures 23, 24) who also figured the species. The species is common in Australia but belongs in a new genus, as yet undiagnosed.
‘ Microarcturus ’ tannerensis Schultz (Schultz, 1966: 20, pl. 14 figures 1–10) was based on a single male specimen (LACM CR19600802 About LACM ). Nothing in the description or illustrations suggest an unambiguous generic placement and examination of the holotype (especially pleopod 1, pereopods, uropod) suggests a new genus of Antarcturidae .
