Corynoneura guanacaste sp. n.

( Fig. 17)

Type material. Holotype male, COSTA RICA, Guanacaste, Caccao , 3–7.v.1993, T. Andersen, ZMBN n°chi 20080.

Diagnostic characters. The adult males are separable from other species with the attachment of the phallapodeme caudal on the sternapodeme, and s-seta on the apex of hind tibia by the superior volsella rounded bearing long seta directed to posteromedian, inferior volsella large and rectangular and aedeagal lobe pointed.

Etymology. This species is named after the province of Guanacaste ( Costa Rica) where the specimen was sampled. The specific epithet is treated as a noun in apposition.

Description

Male (n = 1)

Total length. 1.36 mm. Wing length 0.59 mm.

Color. Thorax brownish. Abdominal tergites I–II whitish, other tergites and genitalia brownish. Legs whitish.

Head. AR = 0.72. Antenna with 9 flagellomeres, apical flagellomere 220 µm. Flagellomeres with more than one row of setae each. Antennal apex as in figure 17 A. Eyes pubescent.

Thorax. Antepronotal lobes dorsally tapering ( Fig. 17 B).

Wing. Clavus/wing length 0.24. Anal lobe absent ( Fig. 17 D).

Legs. Hind tibial scale 37–42 µm long, with one s-seta ( Fig. 17 C).

Hypopygium ( Figs 17 E–F). Tergite IX with 2 setae. Laterosternite IX apparently without setae. Superior volsella rounded bearing long setae medially directed. Inferior volsella large and rectangular. Aedeagal lobe pointed. Transverse sternapodeme straight, phallapodeme caudal attached. Phallapodeme spatula-shaped. Gonostylus with a low crista dorsalis.

Metric and meristic features in Table 1.

Remarks. Corynoneura guanacaste sp. n. hypopygium has a pointed aedeagal lobe and a distinct inferior volsella similarly to C. septadentata Wiedenbrug et Trivinho-Strixino , however the long setae directed to median on the superior volsella and the size of the inferior volsella separate this two species.

The species is only known from the type locality, Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica .
