Corynoneura trondi sp. n.

( Figs 32–33)

Type material. Holotype pharate male with pupal exuviae, CHILE, Region XI, Puerto Aisen, small waterfall on road to Lago Riesco, 45°28.168´S, 72°37.491´W, 46 m a.s.l., 22.iii.1999, T. Andersen, ZMBN n° chi 3923 GoogleMaps . Paratypes: two pupal exuviae same data as holotype.

Diagnostic characters. Male of C. trondi differs from other Neotropical species with phallapodeme attached in the caudal apex of the sternapodeme by the curved small seta at the subapex of the hind tibia, transverse sternapodeme short and inferior volsella rounded. The pupa can be differentiated by the anal lobes laterally rounded, tergites III – V with larger spines of posterior row, on tergite III present on a mound.

Etymology. Named after Dr. Trond Andersen, a chironomid specialist who collected this species.

Description

Male (n = 1)

Thorax length 0.45 mm.

Head. AR = 0.27. Antenna with 10 flagellomeres, apical flagellomere 72 µm ( Fig. 32 A). Flagellomeres, except first and last, with more than one row of setae each. Eyes pubescent.

Thorax. Antepronotal lobes dorsally tapering.

Wing. Not possible to measure.

Legs. Hind tibial scale with curved seta ( Fig. 32 B–C).

Hypopygium ( Figs 32 D–E). Tergite IX with 4 setae. Laterosternite IX with 1 seta. Superior volsella absent. Inferior volsella rounded. Aedeagal lobe apparently absent. Transverse sternapodeme short. Phallapodeme with posterior margin sclerotized, attached in the caudal apex of the sternapodeme.

Metric and meristic features in Table 1.

Pupa (n = 1–2)

Total length 1.68 mm.

Color (exuviae). Cephalothorax and abdomen transparent.

Cephalothorax. Frontal apotome almost smooth. Thorax suture smooth except scutal tubercle region with small spines. All Dc-setae thin taeniate. Dc 1 displaced ventrally. Wing sheaths with two to three brows of pearls.

Abdomen ( Figs 33 A–C). Sternite I and tergite I bare, tergite II with fine shagreen posteriorly. Tergites III–V with fine shagreen increasing in size posteriorly, with posterolateral teeth larger on a mould. Tergites VI–IX with more homogeneous shagreen. Sternites II–V with fine shagreen posteriorly. Sternites VI–VIII with shagreen points slightly increasing in size posteriorly. Conjunctives TII/III–TVI/VII and SV/VI–SVII/VIII with spinules. Segment I with 1, II with 3 L-setae and IV–VIII with 4 long taeniate L-setae. Anal lobe rounded ( Fig. 33 B). Anal lobe with fringe almost complete, 3 taeniate macrosetae and inner setae taeniate.

Metric and meristic features in Table 3.

Remarks. Corynoneura trondi sp. n. was collected in a small waterfall in Region XI, Chile.
