Kohlmann cols."; 2 ♂♂ labeled "MEXICO: Mexico, 8 km W Temascaltepec, 2360 m, 11-VII-76, Fungus in pine-oak forest, W.D. Edmonds, P. Reyes and B. Kohlmann cols."; 1 ♂ labeled "Real de Arriba, Dist. Distribution and ecology.

This species is known from the environs of Temascaltepec, State of Mexico (Fig. 5), and inhabits pine-oak forests from 2200-2360 m. a.s.l. Phanaeus halffterorum is considered a mycetophagous species ( Edmonds 1979, 1994, Halffter and Edmonds 1982).
