Key to the species of Tuponia View in CoL View at ENA of Romania and neighboring countries

As a result of this study, a total of 5 species of Tuponia were confirmed to occur in Romania, as detailed in the updated checklist of Table 1. In the table these species are listed together with all the species of Tuponia known to occur also in the neighboring countries. Two species which were never recorded from Romania but may be found in the country with more sampling efforts were also added in the species key: Tuponia (Chlorotuponia) brevirostris Reuter, 1883 and Tuponia (Tuponia) mixticolor (A. Costa, 1862) . In order to facilitate their identification, we provide photos of habitus and illustrations of the male genitalia ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 and 11 View FIGURE 11 , respectively).

In the use of the following key, it should be noted that the dorsal green color tends to fade and turn yellowish in dry specimens. A reliable identification of the species of Tuponia s. str. should be based on the examination of male genitalia.

1 Dorsal surface green, often with whitish pattern, sometimes whitish with green spots.......... 2 (subgen. Chlorotuponia )

- Dorsal surface whitish or yellowish white, with red, brown or yellow-brown pattern................. 4 (subgen. Tuponia View in CoL )

2 Labium short, extending to or slightly exceeding the apices of the front coxae; male genitalia as in Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 ...... brevirostris View in CoL

- Labium long, extending to or slightly exceeding the apices of the hind coxae...................................... 3

3 Ocular index 1.1–1.8 in males, 2.4–3.0 in females; tibial spines not arising from basal dark dots; male genitalia as in Figs. 2 A–E View FIGURE 2 ...................................................................................... hippophaes View in CoL

- Ocular index 2.8–3.4 in males, 3.4–3.6 in females; tibial spines arising from minute dark dots; male genitalia as in Figs. 2 G–K View FIGURE 2 ......................................................................................... prasina View in CoL

4 Color pattern of hemelytra uniform or little contrasted; ocular index in females higher than 2; male genitalia as in Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 .............................................................................................. montandoni View in CoL

- Hemelytra with distinct reddish, ochraceous or brown band across apical part of corium and clavus (sometimes indistinct in T. arcufera View in CoL ); ocular index less than or equal to 2.0............................................................. 5

5 Male genitalia as in Figs. 11B–E View FIGURE 11 , vesica S-shaped, entirely chitinized, not bifurcated apically ( Fig. 11E View FIGURE 11 )........ mixticolor View in CoL

- Male genitalia as in Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ; vesica bifurcated apically, partly membranous........................................ 6

6 Hemelytra generally with red transverse band; male genitalia as in Figs. 5A–G View FIGURE 5 ; right paramere ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ) elongate, narrow, apically truncate; phallotheca ( Figs. 5D–E View FIGURE 5 ) with two preapical lamellate keels.............................. elegans View in CoL

- Hemelytra generally with ochraceous transverse band; male genitalia as in Figs. 5H–M View FIGURE 5 ; right paramere ( Figs. 5H–M View FIGURE 5 ) leaf-like, apically pointed; phallotheca ( Figs. 5D–E View FIGURE 5 ) with one preapical lamellate keel................................ arcufera View in CoL
