Genus Ariptyelus Matsumura, 1940 View in CoL View at ENA
Aphrophora Germar, 1821 View in CoL (in part). Matsumura, 1907, Annot. Zool. Jap. 6: 83–116. Ariptyelus Matsumura, 1940 View in CoL , J. Fac. Agric. Hokkaido Imp. Univ. 45(2): 50. Toroptyelus Matsumura, 1942 View in CoL , Ins. Matsum. 16: 90–91 (Type species: Toroptyelus arisanus Matsumura, 1942 View in CoL ) [syn-
onymised by Liang, 1998: 243].
Type species: Aphrophora auropilosus Matsumura, 1907
Coloration: Body light brown to dark brown. Eyes yellowish brown to brown. Ocelli red. Genae and base of mouth parts brown to dark brown. Tegmen ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 1C, 5C) with discontinuous dots on basal half of costal margin. Wing hyaline, veins brown; apical area, first apicall cell, and the second apical cell with brown pubescence. Fore and middle legs brown, with ring bands dark brown. Hind leg brown to dark brown.
Structure: Body spindlelike ( Figs. 2 View FIGURE 2 A, 2C, 5A), medium sized (including tegmen about 5.6–7.3 mm long), head width: body width: body length= 1: 1.3–1.4: 2.8–2.9. Head triangular, with distinct median carina running from vertex to mesoscutellum. Head slightly wider than pronotum at level of anterior margin, about 1–1.1: 1. Frons in frontal view prominent, but longitudinally flattened medially, with indistinct median carina basally, with 11 transverse ridges at each side. Antenna, with scape short cylindrical; three basiconic sensilla near base of flagellum, plate- like, 2 elongate, the ovate one set between elongate ones. Rostrum reaching apex of hind coxae. Tegmen ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 A, 1C, 5C) subquadrate, AM: PM: LT = 1: 1.5–2.1: 3.1–4; venation typical; the joint of M and Cu1 basad of joint of R1 and Rs; 1A parallel with Cu2. Wings ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 1D, 5D) with 4 apical cells, apical cells with first one longer than third by ratio of 1.4–1.7: 1, second apical cell closed by r-m cross vein, third apical cell closed by m-cu cross vein; apical area with brown pubescence; wing coupling apparatus with 3–4 hooks ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 B, 1D, 5F) on basal part of costal margin. Meracanthus of midleg triangular and lamellate, with median carina. Hind tibia with 2 lateral spines, basal one approximately 0.4–0.6 times closer to apex of femur than distal one is to apex of tibia; apical spines arranged in 2 rows, upper row with 7– 9 spines, lower one with 8–10 spines.
Male Genitalia: Pygofer subquadrate in lateral view ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 A, 4A, 6A), about 1.2–1.3 times wider than long; basal margin of pygofer (bmp) curved inward to various degrees; dorsal process of pygofer (= pygofer disk) cone like in lateral view, ventral process of pygofer (= genital plate) in lateral view, shorter than ventral length of pygofer about 1: 1.7–3.7; ventral process (LWVP) at widest part narrower than basal width of pygofer (LBWP) about 1: 4.9–5.5. Abdominal segment X cylindrical. Abdominal tergite of segment XI (XIt) rooflike, sternite XI somewhat ovate. Aedeagus ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 E, 4E, 6E) membranous, elongate or trapezoidal in lateral view. Phallobase and connective not separated. Genital styles triangular in lateral view ( Figs. 3 View FIGURE 3 C, 3D, 4C, 4D, 6C, 6D); width of apical part about 0.5–1.2 times length of genital style (WAGS: LAGS= 0.5–1.2: 1) on outer side, margin with complete to incomplete prominence on inner side.
Remarks: Ariptyelus is similar to the genus Peuceptyelus , but the differences are summarized in Table 1 View TABLE 1 . The morphological definition of Peuceptyelus is based on the description of Ossiannilsson (1981). Species of Ariptyelus may be distinguished using the following key.
