Salamandra cirrigera Green 1831

Holbrook (1840:119, pl. 25) presented a brief account of the Southern Two-lined Salamander ( Eurycea cirrigera ), which had only been described nine years earlier by Green and was known to Holbrook only from limited collections in Louisiana and Mississippi. Holbrook (1842e:53, pl. 15) reprinted the account essentially verbatim, reproducing the same illustration by J. Queen. Holbrook noted his earlier doubts that this species was distinct from E. bislineata but was swayed by Green’s (incorrect) belief in the permanence of the cirri, as well as the lateral compression of the tail compared to the rounder E. bislineata . Holbrook also stated his curiously incorrect belief that this species “lives on land, and probably never seeks the water but in the breeding season.” No specimens are known to exist among Holbrook’s extant collections.
