Sphenophorus lineatus Champion, 1910 ( Figs. 1–4 View Figs )

Sphenophorus lineatus Champion 1910: 166 . Vaurie 1951: 71 ( Calendra View in CoL ); Vaurie 1954: 5 ( Calendra View in CoL ); O’ Brien and Wibmer 1982: 212.

Specimens Examined (3). MEXICO: Guerrero, Amula, 6000’, Aug, H.H. Smith. (3 males, BMNH; lectotype, here designated) .

Champion (1910) described this species from three males and one female. I have seen the same three specimens examined by Vaurie (1951), two males and one (likely) male specimen but missing the abdomen. Vaurie noted this latter specimen as ‘type’ and it bears a circular orangerimmed label marked ‘type’; however, it and the other two specimens also bear circular blue-rimmed ‘syntype’ labels, and in the original description Champion did not designate a type specimen. I can find no published lectotype designation and thus here designate one of the complete male specimens, labelled as noted above, as the lectotype, the other two specimens thus as paralectotypes.

Sphenophorus quadrivittatus Gyllenhal, 1838 ( Figs. 5–8 View Figs )

Sphenophorus quadrivittatus Gyllenhal 1838: 962. Champion 1910: 165; Vaurie 1951: 70 (Calendra); Vaurie 1954: 5 (Calendra); O’ Brien and Wibmer 1982: 213.

Specimens Examined (8). MEXICO: Mexico, 13 mi N. Acambay, 8400’, Aug 15, 1974, C. & L. O’ Brien & G. Marshall, under water on aquatic grass (2 males, CMNC). Durango, 49 km N. Durango, on Rte 23, 1980 m, 28.vii.1993, S. McCleve, G.E. & K. Ball, Acacia grassland (1 female, CMNC). 8 mi E. El Salto, 8400’, 12 Aug 1972, R.R. & M.E. Murray (1 male, CMNC). 0.5 mi S, Llano Grande, 8800’, 12 Aug 1972, R.R. & M.E. Murray (1 female, CMNC). Otinapa, 8200’, Aug 11, 1947, M. Cazier (1 male, 1 female, CMNC). Jalisco, Ojuelos de Jalisco, 7400’, 21 Aug 1954, C.D. Michener (1 male, CMNC).

The type of this species is in Stockholm and was examined by Vaurie (1951). Vaurie (1951) lists records of this species from Durango, Puebla, and Mexico City. Later, she added records from San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, and Jalisco (Vaurie 1954). She notes the weevils were found in the grassy edges of a pool in a desert area and under dry cow dung near a similar pool.
