Equus grevyi Oustalet 1882 View in CoL
Equus grevyi Oustalet 1882 View in CoL , La Nature (Paris), 10 (2): 12.
Type Locality: Described as "region de l'Afrique orientale qu'on appelle le pays des Gallas", i.e. Ethiopia, Gallaland, Shoa Prov. ( Rzasnicki, 1951), restricted to Awash Valley ( Yalden et al., 1986).
Vernacular Names: Grevy's Zebra.
Synonyms: Equus berberensis Pocock 1902 ; Equus faurei Matschie 1898 .
Distribution: Dry desert regions of S and E Ethiopia, N Kenya, and S Somalia (extinct).
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Threatened; IUCN – Endangered.
Discussion: Reviewed by Churcher (1993, Mammalian Species, 453). Restriction of type locality to Lake Zwai ( Roosevelt and Heller, 1914) is erroneous, as there are no records of the species from this lake region ( Yalden et al, 1986).
