TYPE LOCALITY: Peru, Loreto Dept., Puca Tambo (listed as Chachapoyas district, Amazonas, Peru in original) .

DISTRIBUTION: NE Peru to S Colombia (Amazonian region of both countries).

SYNONYMS: nigrofulvus.

COMMENTS: Subgenus Proechimys . Considered as part of simonsi by Corbet and Hill (1991:206) and Eisenberg (1989:403). The chromosome no. is 2n=32.
