COMMENTS: Reviewed by Honeycutt et al. (1991). The family has been traditionally divided into two subfamilies: Bathyerginae with grooved upper incisors ( Bathyergus ); and Georychinae with ungrooved upper incisors ( Cryptomys , Georychus , Heliophobius, Heterocephalis ). Honeycutt et al. (1991:59) did not support such groupings.
