Neoperla leopoldina Navás, 1932 View in CoL , nomen dubium
Neoperla leopoldina Navás, 1932: 284 View in CoL , fig. 83.
Navás named a specimen without abdomen from "Bomokandi (sources)". It was described as "similar to leroiana Klapálek. Larger View in CoL ” [our translation]. Navás claimed that placement of the ocelli, shape of prothorax, colour of legs, and wing venation distinguished his new taxon “from species close to it”. The names of the allegedly related species were not disclosed. The characters in question are all insufficient for species identification. A doubtful taxon. We did not study the type (allegedly in MRAC) .
7. Acknowledgements
H. B. Noel Hynes was the first contemporary scientist dealing with the taxonomy of the African Neoperla . He recognised that the previously used habitus characters are unsuitable for species distinction and instead looked at genitalia and eggs. He concluded that the African fauna comprises
* either one single variable species of Neoperla .
* or many very similar and often coexisting ones ( Hynes 1952a).
We repeatedly discussed our controversial opinions on the subject, and Noel eventually considered there might be two, possibly even three different African Neoperla . I (PZ) would like to honour my late friend but realise that he would not have appreciated an African Neoperla species named after him.
The few SEM-micrographs in our paper were either prepared by technicians at the former Max-Planck-Institute of Limnology at Pl̂n while PZ worked in the institute's branch office at Schlitz. Others were adopted from T. Moore (1991), with permission of B. P. Stark ( Clinton , Mississippi, USA) to use illustrations from the work of his former student; we thank him very much .
We are particularly grateful to Hong Shen (SMNS at the time), Diana Hartley, James Nicholls and Stephen Bent (all CSIRO) for their technical support with the generation and assembly of DNA sequence data. The genome-skimming approach utilised developments and labour resources from AZ‘s ”High-throughput Collection Genomics“ project in CSIRO‘s Environomics Future Science Platform program.
We sincerely thank S. Grubbs for constructive suggestions and careful editing of our manuscript.
