Phoenicagrion megalobos View in CoL sp. nov.
Figures 9, 10 View FIGURES 1 – 11 , 17 View FIGURES 12 – 17 , 23
Etymology. From the Greek megas = large, and lobos = lobe. A reference to the very large hind prothoracic lobe of the male in this species.
Type specimens. Holotype 3, allotype ♀, BRAZIL, Pará State, Cachimbo (8º 30´S, 55º 50´W). X-1955, Pe. F. S. Pereira leg. Paratype: 1 3, same data as holotype. Deposited in ABMM collection.
Description. Male holotype.
Head. Frons angled. Labium orange yellow; labrum orange yellow, grayish medially; anteclypeus and postclypeus grayish orange; frons orange, remainder of upper part of head matte black with an orange occipital bar and an yellow oblique stripe between lateral ocellus and antennae. Rear of head black with medial 1/4 yellow.
Thorax. Prothorax: orange with hind prothoracic lobe grayish orange. Pterothorax: orange with a complete grayish blue stripe on mesepisternum, an oblique one on mesepimeron and metepisternum and a longitudinal one on metepimeron. Legs yellow with extensor surfaces of femora black. Wings hyaline, pterostigma light brown surmounting one cell. Px in FW 13, in HW 11, R3 arising near Px 7 in FW and Px 6 in HW. Petiolation at Ac in both wings.
Abdomen. S1–S5 dorsally orange laterally yellowish orange; S6 dorsally grayish orange, laterally yellowish orange. A distal dark brown ring on S3–S6. S7–S10 orange red.
Structural characters. Hind prothoracic lobe forming a large posteriorly directed subrectangular plate with postero-lateral corners rounded ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 1 – 11 ), its base subequal to width of middle lobe. Cercus subequal to S10, in dorsal view, straight at anterior half then strongly convergent, with apex truncate ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 12 – 17 ). In lateral view ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 12 – 17 ) with the dorsal margin undulate and ventral margin with a strong ventral tooth. Paraproct shorter than cercus, apex with black pointed tip directed dorsally. Penis (Fig. 23) with well developed inner fold, poorly developed terminal fold, and apex concave without well-defined lateral lobes.
Dimensions. Abdomen 30.7, HW 20.8
Description. Female allotype.
Head. Labium, genae, and base of mandibles yellow; labrum and anteclypeus grayish blue; postclypeus, antefrons, and upper part of head in front of median ocellus reddish brown, remainder of head black with reddish brown occipital band and yellow orange oblique stripe. Rear of head predominantly black.
Thorax. As in male including legs and wing color. Px in FW 13, in HW 11, R3 arising near Px 7 in FW and Px 6 in HW. Petiolation at Ac in both wings.
Abdomen. S1–S2 dorsally orange, laterally yellowish orange; S3–S6 dorsally dark brown, laterally brownish orange; S7 proximal 1/2 dorsally dark brown, remainder reddish orange. S8–S10 orange red, ovipositor orange yellow.
Dimensions (mm). Abdomen 32.0; HW 22.0
Remarks. P. megalobos belongs in the paulsoni species group together with P. k a r a j a and P. paulsoni from which it differs by characters in the key. Its subrectangular hind prothoracic lobe is perhaps the largest in the Neotropical Coenagrionidae . The penis of P. megalobos differs from that of the other species of the genus by lacking well-defined lateral lobes whereas the generic characterization of Phoenicagrion (von Ellenrieder, 2008) refers to two pairs of lateral lobes with chitinized apices. In all other morphological characters however P. m e g a l o b o s fits well the definition of Phoenicagrion .
