Enchelycore anatina ( Lowe 1838)

Muraena anatina Lowe 1838: 192 . (Off Madeira). Neotype, BMNH 1869.3.7.1, designated by Böhlke et al. 1989: 136. Muraena sanctaehelenae Günther 1870: 115 ( Saint Helena I., South Atlantic). Holotype (unique), BMNH 1868.3.11.3.

DISTRIBUTION: Atlantic.

REMARKS: Most recent authors have considered Muraena sanctaehelenae a synonym of M. anatina . Ben-Tuvia and Golani (1984: 542) pointed out differences in proportions, body color, and vertebral counts and on this basis recognized it as distinct. Böhlke at al. (1989:137) considered those characters insufficiently diagnostic and returned it to synonymy. However, the vertebral count of the holotype and only known specimen (146) is well outside the range of other specimens (151–158), and the color pattern seems distinct ( Böhlke et al. 1989: fig. 135). If additional specimens confirm these distinctions, Enchelycore sanctaehelenae could be recognized as a valid species.

REMARKS: The holotype and paratype from Japan have 148–149 vertebrae (Böhlke 1982: 42); the specimens reported from the Galápagos by McCosker and Rosenblatt (1975: 422) have 136–142. This suggests that the two populations may not be conspecific .
