Anthocoptes transitionalis Hodgkiss 1913
Type host and locality. Acer rubrum L. ( Sapindaceae ), USA, New York, Geneva.
Distribution. England (recorded here), Hungary (Ripka & de Lillo 1997), Serbia ( Petanović & Stanković 1999) and USA (op. cit.)
Relation to the host. Originally found in deformed or "pustular" areas in the smooth bark of A. rubrum (red maple) ( Hodgkiss 1913), and also recorded on the underside of leaves, causing russeting and drying of leaves ( Batchelor 1952). In the British population studied here the mites were found vagrant on the underside of the leaves causing no apparent damage.
