Eggens et al. (2020: 16) proposed to neotypify the name Silene kowalenskyi , which was regarded as synonym of S. arenosa Koch (1841: 711) , using a specimen collected by Kowalensky in Azerbaijan and deposited at G-BOIS (barcode G00544651). This neotypification should instead be a lectotypification according to Art. 9.19 of Shenzhen Code ( Turland et al. 2018). In fact, Stschegleew (l.c.) stated: “j’ai reçu une petite collection des plantes (110 espèces) que Mr. Kowalensky a cueillies entre Nackitschewan et Ordoubad et qu’il a eu la bonté de m’envoyer” (= “I received a small collection of plants (110 species) that Mr. Kowalensky gathered between Nackitschewan and Ordoubad and that he was kind enough to send me”. Moreover, as reported on page 330, since Stschegleew worked in Moscow, personnel at LE and KW searched for additional specimens and, in addition to the one at G-BOIS cited above, one was located in the Turczaninow Herbarium (KW-TURCZ) at the National Herbarium of Ukraine (KW). Both the G-BOIS and KW-TURCZ sheets are part of the original material and eligible as lectotypes. We here designate the specimen at G-BOIS as the lectotype since it bears flowers which are important in the taxonomy of the genus Silene . The specimen at KW-TURCZ, which includes only fruits, is the isolectotype.
