Holotype M: [Poste de] Crique Anguille, [ Tonnegrande River ], French Guiana ( IPP *); coll. E. Abonnenc; 18 June 1945; no. 748 bis.
Culex punctiscapularis was synonymized with Cx. nigrimacula Lane & Whitman by Lane (1951: 334) and resurrected from synonymy by Duret (1969: 122). The holotype (wrongly dated from 1946 in the original publication), originally deposited in the IPG, was found in the IPP by Harrison (1973: 278). According to Duret (1969: 124), the only paratype (no. 748) of Cx. punctiscapularis is deposited in the NMNH but this could not be confirmed.
