Holotype M (with associated larval and pupal exuviae): French Guiana ( NE); coll. G. Senevet and E. Abonnenc; date not provided; no. G.864.
Culex aurilatus was synonymized with Cx. chrysonotum Dyar & Knab by Rozeboom & Komp (1950: 88) and became a synonym of Cx. theobaldi (Lutz) when Cx. chrysonotum was synonymized with that species by Forattini & Sallum (1989: 201). The holotype, originally deposited in the LPFM, was established as non-extant by Belkin (1968: 53).
