Stachys View in CoL L. sect. Olisia Dumort., Fl. Belg. View in CoL : 44 (1827) ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 , 2 View FIGURE 2 )
Type:― S. annua (L.) L., Sp. Pl. ed. 2: 813 (1763)
Description:―Suffruticose perennials, rarely biennials to annuals, with or without basal rosettes. Flowering stems erect to decumbent, simple or branched. Basal leaves ovate to ovate-oblong or ovate-lanceolate, sometimes orbicular, cordate to cuneate or attenuate at base, passing either gradually or abruptly into cauline leaves. Cauline leaves ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate to oblanceolate, cuneate to attenuate at base, gradually passing into smaller sessile floral leaves. Bracteoles usually few, setaceous, 0.5‒3 mm, rarely herbaceous, lanceolate to linear-subulate, mucronate, rarely absent. Calyx usually subbilabiate, ± regular, tubular to campanulate, teeth subequal, triangular to lanceolate or lanceolate-subulate, mucronate. Corolla tube usually subexserted, annulate (except S. inanis ). Nutlets oblong-elliptic to obovoid, usually minutely reticulate, rarely smooth on surface, black or blackish-brown.
Distribution:―Mainly Mediterranean Europe and Anatolia, extending into Iran and Caucasia (24 species in the Old World area).
Notes:―The section Olisia of Stachys was described by Dumortier (1827), and later treated at generic rank by Spach (1838: 166). Bhattacharjee (1980) divided S. sect. Olisia into 5 subsections: Rectae R. Bhattacharjee (1980: 84), Distantes R. Bhattacharjee (1980: 86), Annuae R. Bhattacharjee (1980: 86), Rosulatae R. Bhattacharjee (1980: 87), and Spinosae R. Bhattacharjee (1980: 87) . To date, however, Bhattacharjee’s (1980) classification has not been well supported by molecular data ( Scheen et al 2010, Bendiksby et al. 2011, Salmaki et al. 2013, 2019). Therefore, the subsectional classification was not applied herein.
