Syntypes:― [Caucasia] in Kaukasus, in Transkaukasien und im Tschorukgebiete [ Turkey, A8 Çoruh] sehr häufig, und zwar auf alien Bodenarten, von 500–5500 hech. [1500‒1676 m], K.Koch s.n. [Not traced]
Description:―Suffrutescent, perennial herbs, without basal rosettes of leaves. Flowering stems erect to decumbent, simple or branched, long, 30‒85 cm, sparsely adpressed hirsute. Lower and median cauline leaves oblong-lanceolate to lanceolate; 3.5‒10 × 0.3‒2 cm, serrate to subentire at margin, acute at apex, spinescent (spine 0.5‒1 mm), attenuate at base, sparsely adpressed hirsute; upper ones usually sublinear, sessile. Floral leaves oblong-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, upper ones ovate-lanceolate, 0.5‒4 × 0.3‒1 cm, lower exceeding the verticillasters, upper ones as long as or slightly longer than verticillasters, subentire to entire at margin, spinescent (spine 1‒1.5 mm), sessile. Verticillasters 4‒20, usually congested-spicate, the lowermost remote, (4‒)6‒8-flowered. Bracteoles few, linear to setaceous, 1.5‒5 mm. Pedicels 0.7‒1 mm. Calyx subbilabiate, tubular to subcampanulate, 8‒12 mm, hirsute, mouth without ring of hairs; teeth subequal, erect to subpatent, lanceolate-subulate, not more than 1 mm wide, 4‒6 × 0.5‒1 mm, as long as tube or more, spinescent-tipped (spine 1‒2 mm). Corolla white, streaked and spotted with purple inside, 12‒18 mm, tube exserted, annulate; limb bilabiate, upper lip 5‒8 mm, entire to emarginate, hirsute on outer surface, lower lip 3‒lobed, middle lobe largest and emarginate, 6‒9 mm. Stamens 4, exserted more than half-way along upper corolla lip. Nutlets broadly obovoid, faintly trigonous, slightly winged near base, 2‒2.5 × 1.7‒2 mm, minutely reticulate-foveate, blackish-brown.
Phenology: ―Flowering between May and August.
Distribution and ecology: ―North Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Crimea, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, north & northwest Iran, Turkey (northeast & east Anatolia). Euro-Siberian (Sarmatian) element. Roadside banks, Artemisia meadows, fallow fields, rocky slopes, stony ground, 850‒2500 m elevation.
Conservation status: ―LC ( IUCN 2017). It is widely distributed in north-eastern and eastern Anatolia, and adjacent countries.
