Hypolepis poeppigii (Kunze) R.A.Rodr., Gayana Bot. View in CoL 46: 202. 1989.
8, 6: 127. 1920.
Range:— Southern Bolivia ( CH, SC, TA); northern Argentina; central Chile.
Ecology:— Uncommon; terrestrial along humid forest edges; 2000–3100 m, 1450–2800 m in Argentina, 100–500 m in Chile .
Notes:— Hypolepis poeppigii is characterized by inermous petioles and rachises, rachises, pinna-rachises, and costae clothed with both catenate and glandular hairs, glabrous laminar tissue between the veins abaxially, submarginal sori, and absence of pseudo-indusia.
In its submarginal sori lacking pseudo-indusia, Hypolepis poeppigii resembles H. rugosula (Labill.) J.Sm. , a subcosmopolitan species ( Schwartsburd & Prado 2014). Hypolepis rugosula has not yet been recorded in the Andes ( Schwartsburd & Prado 2014, 2015, 2016) but is expected to occur there. Hypolepis poeppigii differs from H. rugosula by the dark brown petiole bases (vs. burgundy), light brown to stramineous rachises (vs. burgundy), subequilateral proximal pinnae (vs. equilateral), and veins glabrous abaxially (vs. with catenate-glandular hairs).
