Distribution: S Texas, E and S Mexico south to Bolivia, Argentina, Parguay, Uruguay, and Brazil; Trinidad.

Conservation: IUCN 2003 and IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Subgenus Dasypterus . Does not include xanthinus , see Baker et al. (1988 a) and Morales and Bickham (1995). For discussion of the ranges of ega and xanthinus see Baker and Patton (1967), Baker et al. (1971, 1988 a), and Bickham (1987).
