MALE ( Figs. 11–14 View FIGURES 11 – 14 ). Total body length 545. Gnathosoma . Hypostomal apex rounded. Infracapitulum apunctate. Peritremes M-shaped, each median branch with 6 chambers, each lateral with 11 chambers. Stylophore rounded posteriorly, 185 long. Idiosoma . Anterior and posterior margins of propodonotal shield concave; this shield, sculptured and punctate laterally. Bases of setae se situated anterior to c1. Length ratio of vi: ve: si 1:1.2:1.8. Hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield. Bases of setae d1 situated equidistant to d2 and e2 bases. Etymology. This new species is dedicated to Prof. Teresa Szeffler, Polish romanist, great erudite and my most memorable teacher.

Type material. Female holotype and 3 female paratypes from the scale-crested pygmy-tyrant Lophotriccus pileatus (Tschudi) ( USNM 643873) ( Passeriformes : Tyrannidae ), PERU: Tumbes, El Caucho Biological Station, 9 June 2009, coll. B.K. Schmidt, mites removed by E. Glowska.

Type deposition. Holotype female and 1 female paratypes are deposited in the USNM, 2 female paratypes in the AMU.

Differential diagnosis. This new species is mostly similar to S. empidonax Skoracki, Flannery and Spicer described from Empidonax hammondii and E. wrightii ( Passeriformes : Tyrannidae ) from USA ( Skoracki et al. 2008). In females of both species, the hypostomal apex bears two pairs of the small protuberances and the hypostomal lips, the peritremes have a similar number of chambers (12–13 and 13–14 in S. empidonax and S. szeffleri , respectively), the propodonotal shield is sculptured and punctate, length ratio of setae vi:ve (1:1.3–1.5 and 1:1.1–1.6), setae se are situated distinctly anterior to c1, the pygidial shield is present, length ratio of h1:h2 (1:5 and 1:3.5–3.8). This new species is distinguishable from S. empidonax by the absence of the hysteronotal shield, subequal setae f1 and h1, fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III–IV with 10–12 tines, setae g1 and g2 unequal in length, and by the lengths of setae se 215, f1 75–80, f2 240–285, ag1 125–145, ag2 105, ag3 140–180. In females of S. empidonax , the hysteronotal shields are present, setae f1 are twice longer than h1, setae p’ and p” of legs III–IV are fan-like with 16 tines, setae g1 and g2 are subequal in the length, lengths of setae se 280, f1 180–190, f2 365, ag1 260–365, ag2 230–250 and ag3 260–350.
