Notes

Spines are roughly equal to the diameter of the body. Maximum recorded size: 14 cm across. Primarily found in crevices, but can form aggregations in the open. Colour a uniform black, juveniles can have banded spines. Commonly known as Short Spine Urchin. Spines are noticeably shorter than those of Diadema sp. (Long Spine Urchin) (Fig. 140 View Figure 140 ).
