Type Locality: Guatemala, Huehuetenango, Jacaltenango, 5400 ft. (1646 m).

Vernacular Names: Merriam's Small-eared Shrew.

Distribution: Highlands of S Mexico (Chiapas), Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, N Nicaragua, and N Costa Rica.

Discussion: C. nigrescens group. Formerly included in nigrescens , but redefined by Woodman and Timm (1993). Occurs syntopically with nigrescens in Costa Rica (Woodman, 2000).
