Metanephrops serendipitus sp. nov.
( Figs 1–2 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 , Tab. 1 View TABLE 1 )
Etymology. The specific name refers to the serendipitous find of the holotype carapace, which was found five years later than the associated chelipeds from the same location. Used as a noun in apposition.
Diagnosis. Medium-sized Metanephrops with robust body and long, slender, almost equal chelae. Carapace spinulose, with three teeth on supraorbital carinae and three pairs of robust, wide, spinulose carinae on branchiostegite; intermediate carina dividing into two separate ridges; antennal spine ornamented with rounded pits with raised posterior rim, themselves appearing spinulose. Abdominal tergites marked by transverse groove, especially on tergites 2 and 3, each also bearing concave “eyebrow” furrow and bilobate tergite-pleuron boundary; tergite cuticle coarsely pitted. Tailfan spinulose; telson sub-rectangular, with spines at postero-lateral angles and pair of submedian spines in anterior part. First pair of pereiopods long, slender, more than twice carapace length; fingers as long as palm; occlusal margin of pollex adorned with row of small, sharp teeth, every fifth tooth larger than remainder, with single large triangular tooth at proximal one-quarter.
Type material. The holotype is RGA/ SMNH 2295 View Materials (cephalothorax and abdomen) ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ), together with RGA/ SMNH 2296 View Materials (tail fan) and RGA/ SMNH 1590 View Materials /1591 (chelipeds) ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ) .
Measurements of holotype. See Table 1 View TABLE 1 .
Type locality. Meljski hrib, Maribor ( Slovenia) .
Stratigraphical age. Early Miocene (Ottnangian/Karpatian; nannofossil biozone NN4 ( Martini 1971)).
Remarks. A full description, figures and discussions of Metanephrops serendipitus are given by Gašparič et al. (2021).
