Old type catalogue. Weidner (1960), p. 62, No. 7. Syntypes (number not specified).
Type status. Cook (1899) mentions examining numerous specimens from Vladivostok at ZMH but did not designate a holotype. Weidner (1960: 62) listed all syntypes from Vladivostok. Note on file card: Geophilus sibiricus Cook. 10 Expl., Sibiria: Vladiwostock Graesser leg., Kraepelin det.: Scolioplanes sulcatus . Mislabelled— E. sibiricus (pencil). 7 microscope slides are held at the ZMH (2 slides are labelled Escaryus Vladivostock Hamburg Mus., 4 slides are labelled “ paralectotype B Escaryus sibiricus Cook ” and 1 slide is labelled “ paratype A Escaryus sibiricus Cook ”). All specimens are syntypes.
Additional type material. There are syntypes 1♀, 1♂ complete, 1 slide (head, Mx) from Russia, Vladivostok (coll. Graeser, don. Hamburg Museum) at the NHMW (no. 7059). Ilie et al. (2009: 53) noted: “The sample at NHMW has a label in Attems’ handwriting ‘ Escaryus sibiricus Wladiwostok Hamb. M’. In his catalogue Attems specified the samples as ‘ Escaryus sibiricus / Wladiwostok, ♂ ♀, acquired 1903, donated by Hamb. Mus.’. In At- tems 1904: 122 he states “Subsequently to this new species [referring to Escaryus retusidens var. oligopus ] I present an extended diagnosis of Escaryus sibiricus Ck. , as Cook’s description is not sufficient and the reader might be tempted to judge both species as identical; director Mr. Kräpelin kindly lent Cook’s originals, which are in possession of Hamburg Museum” .
Current systematic position. Escaryus sibiricus Cook, 1899 .
