Kraepelin 1903: 193–194 (as Cormocephalus büttneri n. sp.)

Type locality and specimens. Deutsch-Ostafrika [ German East Africa] ( Tanga , Kimpko , Ituri-Fähre etc), Mombas [a]. Mus. Berlin .

Dimensions. Länge bis [length up to] 90 mm.

Type material. Syntypes 2 ( ZMH-A0000588 , ZMH-A0009266 ). TANZANIA: Tanga Region, Bulok (near Tanga) [ca. 5°04’S, 39°06’E].

Preservation. 1 jar: Label. Cormoceph. büttneri Krpln ex typis Bulok bei Tanga, Mus. Berlin C. 20. V.03 (Kraepelin handwriting) .

Old type catalogues. Weidner (1960), p. 65, No. 15. Paratypes 5.

Type status. Weidner (1960: 65) listed 5 paratypes. The file card documents that 2 paratypes from “Kuako bei Kimpoko” and a paratype from “Ituri-Fähre” are missing.

Additional type material. There are additional syntypes from Usambara , Tanzania at the ZMB (no. 3470, 3474, 3483, 3531, 3561, 3570–71, 3616, 3641–43, 3753, 4328) .

Collection remarks. The region around the harbour town of Tanga was a former German settlement. The specimens originate from the ZMB collections.

Other remarks. Kraepelin does not explain the etymology of his name but the species was likely named after Richard Büttner (1858–1927), a German botanist with an interest in entomology, who explored the Congo between 1884 and 1886.
