Type Locality: "Amazonia"; probably an error (Cabrera, 1961:577).
Vernacular Names: Shiny Guinea Pig.
Synonyms: Cavia nigricans Wagner 1844 ; Cavia rufescens Lund 1841 .
Distribution: E Brazil, between Minas Gerais and Santa Catarina.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Karyotype has 2n=64 and FN=128 ( Gava et al., 1998).
