Material examined: GERMANY: Lower Saxony, Wilhelmshafen, shore between harbors , holotype female reared from larva, but with no immatures on slides, collected viii.1953, H. Bauer, on 2 slides (GP607, 608, NMS) . Paratypes 14 females or parts of females, 10 pupal exuviae, 1 larva, same data as holotype .

Diagnostic characters: The parthenogenetic female imago can be separated from P. danconai by having LR 1 of 0.44–0.48, tergite IX divided by sharply triangular notch and possibly by gonocoxite having more sharply pronounced triangular posterolateral corner. The pupae are separable only by having fewer spinules on sternal conjunctives III/IV and IV/V (0–14) and more on VII/VIII (33–51).The larva is not separable from those of P. danconai .

Female imago (n = 10, except when otherwise stated)

All measurements and ratios within the range of variation of P. forcipata with the following exceptions and additions: AR 0.30–0.46, 0.36 (4). First flagellomere 41–59, 51 µm long, fifth with 17–21 µm (2) long apical setae ( Strenzke 1960b, fig. 12). Third palpomere with 7 scalpellate sensilla clavata, fourth palpomere with 1 sensillum clavatum. Coronal suture absent. Costal extension ( Fig. 107 A View FIGURE 107 ) 59–78, 69 µm (6) long, with 7–11, 10 non-marginal setae. Hind femur 351–383, 365 µm long, hind tarsus 189–212, 202 µm long; BV 1 3.97–4.48, 4.37 (11); BR 1 1.8–2.5, 2.2 (11); LR 2 0.41–0.46, 0.44 (6); BV 2 4.30–4.86, 4.50 (6); SV 2 4.11–4.83, 4.28 (6); SV 3 3.15–3.43, 3.32 (6). Genitalia ( Fig. 107 B–F View FIGURE 107 ; Strenzke 1960b, fig. 14) with pointed posterolateral corner of gonocoxite slightly surpassing tergite IX, gonocoxite with 3–6, 4 (14) setae including 1–2, 2 (14) strong and 2–4, 3 (14) weak setae. Tergite IX divided by deep triangular notch, with 8–14, 10 (14) setae.

Pupa (n = 9–10)

Total length 1.56–2.07, 1.78 mm. Exuviae tinged with brownish yellow especially on cephalothoracic margins.

Cephalothorax ( Strenzke 1960b, fig. 40). Frontal apotome, thorax and wing sheath smooth. Frontal setae, longer precorneals, median antepronotals, single lateral and Dc 4 all about 35–60 µm long. Shorter precorneal and postorbitals about 20–30 µm long. Distance between Dc 1 and Dc 2 30–57, 51 µm; between Dc 2 and Dc 3 11–25, 16 µm; between Dc 3 and Dc 4 6–26, 13 µm.

Abdomen ( Fig. 107 G, H View FIGURE 107 ; Strenzke 1960b, fig. 16). Tergite I bare, T II–VII with shagreen on most of segment, T VIII with band free of spinules in front of posterior spinules, T IX with coarse median spinules. Sternites I–II bare, S III with a few posteromedian spinules, S IV–VI with a few anteromedian and more numerous posterior spinules, S VII–VIII with anterior spinules, S IX bare. Tergal conjunctives II/III with 0–6, 1 spinule, spinules present on 5 of 10 specimens; III/IV with 14–27, 23 spinules; IV/V with 21–44, 36; V/VI with 15–47, 31; VI/VII with 20–40, 29; VII/ VIII with 0–3, 0 spinules, very weak and present in only 1 specimen. Sternal conjunctive III/IV with 0–13, 2 spinules present in 4 of 10 specimens; IV/V with 17–34, 24; V/VI with 30–75, 55; VI/VII with 34–66, 51; VII/VIII with 9–22, 16 spinules, very weak when few. Anal segment with dorsal and ventral tubercle, but no setae.

Fourth instar larva (n = 1)

Total length not measurable. Head capsule length about 0.20 mm.

Head. Antenna as in Fig. 107 I View FIGURE 107 . Length of antennal segments (in µm): 10, 4, 1.5, 2.5. AR 1.22. Basal antennal segment 11.5 µm wide; blade 25 µm long; accessory blade 5 µm long. Subapical style of second segment 3.5 µm long. Premandible ( Fig. 107 J View FIGURE 107 ) 47 µm long. Mandible ( Fig. 107 K View FIGURE 107 ) 83 µm long; with 3 inner teeth; seta subdentalis 3.5 µm long, seta interna absent. Mentum not possible to illustrate on available specimen. Postmentum 74 µm long.

Abdomen. Abdomen missing. According to Strenzke (1960b) posterior parapods with 3 pale claws each about 20 µm long. According to Strenzke (1960b fig.20) posterior parapods about 60 µm long, anal tubules 50–60 µm long, wider than long.

Distribution

The species is known from Britain, France and Germany.
