Pseudosmittia n. sp.; Ferrington et al. (1995).

Type material: Holotype male, USA: Kansas, Scott County, Big Springs near Scott County State Lake , 13.3 mi N., 0.6 mi W. of Scott City , 28.vi.1983, L. C. Ferrington, Jr. ( USNM) . – Paratype male, same data as holotype except 24.v.1985 ( ZMBN) .

Diagnostic characters: The male imago can be separated from other species of the subgroup by having a strong apical seta on last flagellomere, 7 lanceolate sensilla clavata at apex of third palpomere, superior and median volsellae partly fused, and inferior volsella fist-shaped.

Etymology: From the Latin puns, a fist, and -atus, provided with, referring to the shape of the inferior volsella.

Male imago (n = 2)

All measurements and ratios within the range of variation of P. forcipata with the following exceptions and additions: Wing ( Fig. 112 C View FIGURE 112 ) length/length of profemur 2.69–2.71; AR 0.69–0.71; terminal flagellomere 210–225 µm long, with 23 µm long strong apical seta; temporal setae 6–8, consisting of 3–4 inner verticals and 3–4 outer verticals; third palpomere ( Fig. 112 E View FIGURE 112 ) with 7 apical lanceolate sensilla clavata in weak sensillum capitatum; thorax with 12–13

dorsocentral setae; VR 1.34; costal extension 30–34 µm long; LR 1 0.49–0.51, LR 3 0.60–0.61; tergite IX ( Fig. 112 H View FIGURE 112 ) apparently with 4 setae; superior and median volsellae partly fused; inferior volsella fist-shaped, 11 µm wide.
