Type material: Holotype male, USA: California, Point Lobos , 6.viii.1964, B. Hocking ( CNC) . – Paratypes, USA: 2 males, same data as holotype ( CNC) .

Diagnostic characters: Pseudosmittia parinavama differs from P. navama in having 3–4 setae on R 1, 1–6 setae on R 4+5, R 4+5 ending slightly distal to apex of M 3+4, and 14–18 sensilla clavata at apex of third palpomere.

Etymology: From Latin parilis, equal, like, and navama , referring to the strong resemblance to the species described above.

. Male imago (n = 3, except when otherwise stated)

All measurements and ratios within the range of variation of P. navama with the following exceptions: Terminal flagellomere 252–284 µm long. Clypeus with 7–10 setae. Fifth palpomere 130–147 µm (2) long; third palpomere ( Fig. 108 H View FIGURE 108 ) with 14–18 sensilla clavata. Antepronotum lobes not reduced, with 4 lateral setae; dorsocentral setae 13–16. VR 1.36–1.40; R with 3–4 setae, R 1 with 0–2, R 4+5 with 1–6, setae; R 4+5 ending distal to apex of M 3+4 ( Fig. 108 F View FIGURE 108 ). Length of front to hind tibiae (in µm): 518–563, 486–556, 509–558; LR 2 0.49–0.50; LR 3 0.58–0.60; BV 3 2.86–3.03; SV 2 3.87–4.02; SV 3 3.19–3.21. Anal point ( Fig. 108 J View FIGURE 108 ) 41–50 µm long. Phallapodeme 66–70 µm long, virga ( Fig. 108 I View FIGURE 108 ) 27–32 µm (2) long. superior volsella 11–16 µm long.

Unknown.

Remarks

Although P. parinavama is very close to P. navama , the differences in wing venation and chaetotaxy and in the sensilla clavata on the palp are significant. The less reduced antepronotum together with the more distal ending of R 4+5 indicate P. parinavama as the plesiomorphic sister species of P. navama .

Distribution

The species is only known from the type locality in California, USA .
