Pseudosmittia propetropis View in CoL sp. n.

( Fig. 94 C–F View FIGURE 94 )

Type material: Holotype male, GHANA: Western Region , Ankasa Game Production Reserve, Malaise trap 3, 6– 12.xii.1993, T. Andersen et al. ( ZMBN Type No. 443).

Diagnostic characters: The species differs from other members of the genus except P. lamellatus and P. tropis by having a long virga with lateral lamellae. It differs from P. lamellatus by having a large bluntly pointed crista dorsalis and a longer gonostylus with outer corner, from P. tropis by having a somewhat curved gonostylus and different crista dorsalis.

Etymology: From Latin, prope, near, and tropis , keel, referring to the large crista dorsalis and the close similarity to P. tropis .

Male imago (n = 1)

Total length 1.14 mm. Wing length 0.66 mm. Total length / wing length 1.73. Wing length/length of profemur 3.00. Coloration brown.

Head ( Fig. 94 C View FIGURE 94 ). AR 0.77, terminal flagellomere 191 µm long. Temporal setae consisting of 2 outer verticals. Clypeus with 5 setae. Tentorium 60 µm long, 9 µm wide; stipes 64 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 11, 17, 23, 24, 43.

Thorax ( Fig. 94 D View FIGURE 94 ). Antepronotal lobes reduced, without lateral seta. Dorsocentrals 5, acrostichals 2, prealar 2, no supraalars. Scutellum with 2 setae.

Wing. Anal lobe absent, wing cuneiform. Cu 1 slightly curved. R 4+5 ending opposite apex of Cu 1. VR 1.76. Costa not extended. Brachiolum with 1 seta, other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 26 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 14 µm and 6 µm, of hind tibia 26 µm and 9 µm long. Width at apex of front tibia 15 µm, of mid tibia 15µm, of hind tibia 23 µm. Comb with 10 setae, 15–19 µm long. Lengths and proportions of leg segments as in Table 71.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 94 F View FIGURE 94 ). Anal point 17 µm long, 12 µm wide at base, with 6 setae, no additional setae on tergite IX; laterosternite IX with 2 setae. Phallapodeme 33 µm long, strongly curved; transverse sternapodeme 38 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 94 E View FIGURE 94 ) 36 µm long, with lateral lamellae. Gonocoxite 88 µm long, superior volsella with strong orally curved microtrichia, extending to 0.70 of gonocoxite; weak adpressed inferior volsella reaching to 0.84 of gonocoxite. Gonostylus 45 µm long, with basal curve and strong outer corner, with large, triangular apical crista dorsalis, megaseta 7 µm long. HR 1.95, HV 2.54.

Female, pupa and larva

Unknown.
