Pseudosmittia bicinctura (Tokunaga) comb. n.

Smittia bicinctura Tokunaga, 1964: 533 .

Material examined: PALAU (BELAU): Koror Island , light trap, holotype female, 5.xii.1952, J. L. Gressitt ( USNM 66546 ) .

Diagnostic characters: The yellow abdomen with tergites III–V, VIII and IX dark, 6 dorsocentrals, apparently 3 sensilla clavata at apex of third palpomere, postcubitus not forked and LR 1 of 0.35 will separate the species from other known females of the genus.

Female imago (n = 1)

Total length not measurable. Wing length 0.69. Wing length/length of profemur 3.06. Coloration ( Tokunaga 1964, fig. 7g) yellow with darker vittae, and postnotum, scutellum yellow, abdomen yellow with tergites III–V, VIII and IX dark brown.

Head. Antennae lost. Temporal of 4 inner and 3 outer vertical setae. Clypeus with 8 setae. Tentorium 73 µm long, 9 µm wide. Stipes not measurable. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 27, 27, 40, 66, 82. Third palpomere apparently with 3 scalpellate sensilla clavata.

Thorax. Antepronotum not measurable. Dorsocentral setae 6, acrostichals 2, prealars 3, no supraalar setae. Scutellum with 6 setae.

Wing ( Tokunaga 1964, 7a). VR 1.51, postcubitus not forked. Costa fused with R 4+5, fused part plus costal extension 151 µm long. R 4+5 ends far proximal of the apex of M 3+4, Cu 1 slightly curved. Brachiolum with 1 seta, costa between FR and apex of R 4+5 with 9 non-marginal setae, costal extension including part fused with R 4+5 with 9 non-marginal setae, R with 3 setae, other veins bare.

Legs. Spurs on front tibia and middle tibia and tarsi all lost, spurs of hind tibia 34 µm and 16 µm long. Width of front tibia 15 µm, of hind tibia 27 µm. Comb of 11 setae, 16–27 µm long. Length and proportions of front and hind legs as in Table 66.

Abdomen ( Tokunaga 1964, fig. 7g). Tergite I bare, T II–VII each with about 6–7 setae, T VIII apparently with 4 setae. Sternites I and II bare, S III–VII each with about 6 setae, S VIII with about 20 setae.

Genitalia. Gonocoxite with 1 strong and 3 very weak setae. Tergite IX probably undivided (mounted in lateral view), with about 7 setae; apodeme against gonocoxite 91 µm long, gonocoxite apparently low and long with triangular caudal projection reaching past tergite IX. Cercus 57 µm long. Seminal capsule 59 µm long, 41 µm wide. Notum 73 µm long.

Male, pupa and larva

Unknown.

Remarks

The species is only tentatively placed in this group. The leg ratio as well as the apparently undivided tergite IX indicate a placement near P. guineensis , while the fused R 4+5 and costa is reminiscent of the conjuncta group. The specimen is not in a condition allowing for detailed drawing.

Distribution

The species is known from Palau only.
