Smittia dupla Tokunaga, 1964: 522 , pro parte.

Pseudosmittia dupla (Tokunaga) ; Cranston and Martin (1989: 262).

Material examined: MARSHALL ISLANDS: Ailinglapalap Island , Ailinglapalap Atoll , holotype male, 26.x.1953, J. W. Beardsley ( USNM 66538 )

Diagnostic characters: The male imago is separable from other members of the group by having a rounded accessory lobe partly underneath the inferior volsella and an AR of 0.30.

Male imago (n = 1)

All measurements and ratio within the range of variation of P. forcipata (p. 298) with the following exceptions and additions: Wing ( Fig. 79 A View FIGURE 79 ) length 0.76 mm. Wing length/length of profemur 2.40. AR 0.30. Terminal flagellomere 101 µm long, without strong apical seta ( Tokunaga 1964 fig. 5b). Dorsocentrals 20. VR 1.73, VR 2 1.33. Cu 1 straight. Middle tibia with only one spur, hind tibia spurs 48 µm and 22 µm long; comb with 12 setae, 26– 48 µm long. BV 1 4.27, BV 3 3.12, BR 1 2.0, BR 2 2.3, BR 3 3.2. Anal point ( Fig. 79 B View FIGURE 79 ; Tokunaga 1964 fig. 6d), 50 µm long, with about 12 lateral setae. Virga 11 µm long. Gonocoxite ( Fig. 79 B View FIGURE 79 ) with triangular inferior volsella covering rounded accessory lobe, both reaching 0.83 gonocoxite length. HR 2.28.

Female, pupa and larva

Unknown.

Remarks

The female associated by Tokunaga (1964: 522) with Pseudosmittia dupla cannot belong to this species since it has only 5 dorsocentrals, no postcubital fork and quite different leg ratios. It is described above as Pseudosmittia tokunagai sp. n. (p 000).

Distribution

The species is known only from the Marshall Islands.
