Type material: Holotype male, TANZANIA: Tanga, West Usambara Mountains, Mazumbai , Malaise trap, xi 1990, ZMBN's Tanzania Expedition ( ZMBN Type No. 436) . — Paratypes: 19 males, same data as holotype ( ZMBN, BMNH, CNC, ZSM, UMSP) .

Diagnostic characters: The male imago differs from P. annulata only in being totally dark brown, from H. tenuistylata in having better developed inferior volsella, normal gonostylus and broadly rounded anal point.

Etymology: The species is named in honor of G. E. E. Søli, one of the leaders of the Tanzania expedition.

Male imago (n = 10, except when otherwise stated)

Total length 1.54–2.26, 1.84 mm. Wing length 1.00–1.18, 1.09 (20). Total length/wing length 1.49–1.82, 1.59. Wing length/length of profemur 2.70–3.05, 2.88. Coloration blackish brown, with fully brown abdomen.

Head ( Fig. 38 B View FIGURE 38 ). AR 0.89–1.33, 1.04 (19). Terminal flagellomere 279–396, 339 µm (19) long. Temporal setae 5–10, 9, consisting of 3–6, 4 inner verticals, 3–6, 4 outer verticals and 0–2, 0 postorbitals. Clypeus with 3–6, 5 setae. Cibarial pump, tentorium and stipes as in Fig. 38 C View FIGURE 38 . Tentorium 94–112, 102 µm long, 21–25, 22 µm wide. Stipes 82– 105, 95 µm long, 21–34, 26 µm wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 18–27, 22; 32–43, 37; 55–64, 61 (11); 50–64, 57 (9); 69–85, 79 (7). Third palpomere with 2 lanceolate sensilla clavata.

Thorax ( Fig. 38 D View FIGURE 38 ). Median antepronotal lobes well developed, antepronotum with 1–3, 2 lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 6–9, 8; acrostichals 2; prealars 3; no supraalar seta. Scutellum with 4–6, 4 setae.

Wing ( Fig. 38 A View FIGURE 38 ). VR 1.30–1.42, 1.36. Anal lobe weak. Costal extension 48–82, 64 µm long. R 4+5 ending above apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 sinuate. Brachiolum with 1 seta, other veins bare (20).

Legs. Spur of front tibia 34–43, 38 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 23–30, 25 µm and 18–27, 23 µm long, of hind tibia 37–42, 40 µm and 14–27, 21 µm long. Width at apex of front tibia 21–24, 22 µm, of middle tibia 23–25, 24 µm, of hind tibia 27–32, 30 µm. Comb of 9–12, 11 setae, shortest setae 18–23, 21 µm long, longest setae 25–37, 32 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 19.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 38 F View FIGURE 38 ). Anal point 23–34, 29 µm long, with rounded apex; tergite IX with 12–16, 14 setae; laterosternite IX with 2–3, 3 setae. Phallapodeme 46–69, 62 µm long, with apical, rounded partly sclerotized tooth. Transverse sternapodeme 39–50, 44 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 38 E View FIGURE 38 ) 27–46, 39 µm long, nearly 2/3 as long as gonostylus, with lateral rows of fine spinules near apex. Gonocoxite 117–146, 124 µm long; no superior volsella; inferior volsella and accessory lobe present and reaching to 0.57–0.65, 0.61 and 0.73–0.80, 0.77 gonocoxite length, respectively. Gonostylus 53–66, 60 µm long; megaseta 6–11, 9 µm long. HR 2.00–2.48, 2.24; HV 2.73–3.83, 3.10.

Distribution

The species is only known from the type locality, near a mountain stream in Tanzania .
