Diagnostic characters: The male imago is characterized by the strongly developed superior volsella and the very large inferior volsella without a trace of an accessory lobe. The female imago differs from all other members of the group by having 23–28 non-marginal setae on the costa proximal of R 4+5 combined with an LR 3 of 0.55–0.57 and presence of anteromedian setae on sternite VIII.

Male imago (n = 9–13, except when otherwise stated)

Total length 1.85–2.37, 2.12 mm. Wing length 1.04–1.44, 1.22 mm (28). Total length/wing length 1.66–1.89, 1.76. Wing length/length of profemur 2.64–2.96, 2.77. Coloration black.

Head ( Fig. 26 B View FIGURE 26 ). AR 0.75–0.95, 0.89 (18). Terminal flagellomere 243–351, 324 µm (18) long. Temporal setae 5–9, 6, consisting of 2–3, 2 inner verticals, 3–5, 3 outer verticals and 0–4, 1 postorbitals. Clypeus with 6–9, 8 setae. Thorax ( Fig. 26 D View FIGURE 26 ). Median antepronotal lobes relatively well developed, antepronotum with 1–3, 2 lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 8–12, 9; acrostichals 6–8, 7; prealars 4–6, 5; supraalar 1. Scutellum with 6–8, 7 setae.

Wing ( Fig. 26 A View FIGURE 26 ). VR 1.39–1.48, 1.44. Anal lobe well developed, projecting. Costal extension 5–18, 10 µm long. R 4+5 ending above apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 sinuate. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 1–4, 3 setae; R 4+5 with 0–3, 1 setae; costal extension with 0–1, 0 non-marginal setae; other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 37–53, 45 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 18–24, 22 µm and 14–23, 19 µm long, of hind tibia 34–48, 43 µm and 14–23, 18 µm long. Width at apex of front tibia 24–30, 27 µm, of middle tibia 21–32, 25µm, of hind tibia 32–41, 37 µm. Comb of 12–15, 14 setae, shortest setae 18–37, 22 µm long, longest setae 27– 41, 34 µm long. Hypopygium ( Fig. 26 F View FIGURE 26 ). Anal point 14–48, 29 µm long; tergite IX with 12–20, 15 setae; laterosternite IX with 7–10, 9 setae. Phallapodeme 59–87, 69 µm long; transverse sternapodeme 37–48, 42 µm long, straight, oral projections weak to relatively well developed. Virga ( Fig. 26 E View FIGURE 26 ) 8–11, 10 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 25–30, 26; 30–34, 32; 59–69, 64; 57–80, 69; 98–112, 104. Third palpomere with 2–3, 2 lanceolate sensilla clavata. Coronal suture 0–25, 6 µm long.

Abdomen. Tergite I with 6–17 setae, T II–IV each with 12–29, 18 setae, T V–VII each with 17–35, 22, T VIII with 16–19 (3) setae. Sternite I and II bare, S III with 5–13, 9 setae, S IV with 7–15, 10, S V with 8–19, 13, S VI with 11–18, 13, S VII with 14–23, 18, VIII with 29–36 (3) setae including 3–10, 5 anteromedian setae.

Genitalia ( Fig. 27 B–F View FIGURE 27 ). Gonocoxite with 5–8, 7 strong and 0–2, 1 weak setae. Tergite IX distinctly to scarcely divided, with altogether 16–19, 17 setae. Cercus 78–103, 88 µm long. Apodeme against gonocoxite 72–82, 77 µm long. Seminal capsule pale, ovoid; 48–69, 53 µm long, excluding 14–21 µm (3) long neck, 37–50, 40 µm wide, microtrichia not observed. Notum 68–98, 91 µm long.

Unknown.

Distribution

The species is known only from the Azores Islands where it is very common and apparently distributed on all the islands (Storå in Frey 1945: 30).
